Latino Americans Blog Post and Reply
Blog Post and Replies Consists of two parts:
1) ORIGINAL POST
Posts will be based on the PBS documentary Latino Americans (posted on Canvas). You will also use The American Yawp or Globalyceum to provide context. You must to answer ONE of the following questions in the Online Discussion forums on Canvas:
1) How did fighting in a war overseas help transform the struggle for Civil Rights at home? By discussing specific examples from the film, explain how and why participating in the war effort reshaped Mexican Americans’ expectations about their own citizenship at home.
2) Though the fighting took place abroad, Americans at home also struggled to make sense of the wartime context. Sites of wartime production often became centers of social tension, and sometimes, sites of outright violence. Explain the context, events, and impacts of the Longoria affair OR the Zoot Suit riots. What do these incidents tell us about race relations in the country during the 1940s and 1950s?
3) Why do you think the filmmaker focuses on the lives of specific individuals during the war? Discuss the experience of at least ONE person’s life in detail (Hector P. Garcia, Felix Z. Longoria, Marcario Garcia, etc). What can this tell us about the experiences of Latino Americans more generally during this time period?
Your posts should include an introduction paragraph with your thesis/argument clearly stated, a body portion of your post, and a conclusion at the end. These must be written in formal paragraph form, and adhere to proper grammar rules.
You must also include at least ONE reference to information from The American Yawp or Globalyceum to support your argument. Citations should be in-text format. Ex: (The American Yawp, Ch. 15, Section 2) or (Globalyceum, “Hispanic Americans, 1848-1945”).
Your posts must be AT LEAST 300 words and are due by Friday, October 18th by 11:55 PM. No late submissions will be accepted. Your post will be worth 3% of your overall mark.
2) RESPONSE
You are also required to provide a response to a post of one of your classmates. You must respond to a post about a DIFFERENT question from the question you answered in your original post. For example, if you answer question #1 in your original post, you must respond to a post under question #2 or #3. In responding to your classmate’s post, you should assess whether they provide a convincing argument. Why/why not? Did they use evidence effectively? Are there any key points they are missing? Do you agree with their assessment? Why/why not? The point is not to be critical, but rather to respond to their analysis in a meaningful way. Your responses must be between 150 and 300 words. Your reply is due Sunday, October 20th by 11:55 PM. No late submissions will be accepted. The response post is worth 2% of your overall mark.
**I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU WRITE YOUR DISCUSSION POSTS IN A WORD DOCUMENT AND CUT AND PASTE THEM INTO CANVAS SO THAT YOU CAN PROOFREAD THEM AND SAVE A COPY.**

the teacher responded: This is a good start, but there are a few things:
The post is supposed to be in a 3 paragraph format with an intro paragraph, a body paragraph, and a conclusion.
The post needs a citation from Globalyceum reading on Hispanic Americans or the textbook. Since Hector Garcia dedicated his life to Latino civil rights in part because he saw that Latino veterans weren’t receiving the benefits of the GI Bill, a quote about what the GI Bill was might be a useful citation. You would use the format of : “quote” (American Yawp, CH X, Sec X).
You need more information about Hector that demonstrates that you watched the film. Hector is one of the main focal points of the film. If anyone is an example of why the filmmakers focused on a specific person, it’s him. What happens to him after the war? What does he dedicate his life to? What organization(s) does he found? Are they successful? Etc.
Don’t forget that you also need to respond to one of your classmates’ blog posts as well
the help from writing center has been attached.
Use the following in-text citation format:
(The American Yawp, Ch. 15, Section 3)
(Globalyceum, “Seneca Falls Convention”)
(Karibo Lecture, “Rethinking the 1920s”)
No bibliography is necessary.
the writing should be middle school level
