Objective: To write a plan for a teachers’ meeting about how to incorporate science into the classroom and to evaluate your meeting plan.
Scenario: You are the principal of an elementary school, and Rupa is a new second-grade teacher this year. She is very enthusiastic and prepares several detailed lesson plans for your review. While you generally like the plans, you see that topics related to science are missing in them. You ask Rupa about it, and she admits that she is not sure how to teach science to second graders, or even what materials and activities are important in a science center. You suggest setting up a science discovery center, and she agrees but looks overwhelmed. Realizing that this is a common issue in your school, you decide to set up a meeting with Rupa and your other teachers to discuss the importance of science and the various ways it can be taught.
Focus Assignment:
Plan a teacher’s meeting that will cover at least two reasons science is important in the elementary school classroom. In addition, include the three types of science experiences you plan to present with an example for each.
Be sure to read the SELF-EVALUATION section below to guide your thinking. Write your self-evaluation after you have completed your meeting plan.
Review the assessment rubric to see how your assignment and self-evaluation will be graded.
