You were assigned two short case studies this week — one by Jafari Allen (about Cuba) and one by Savannah Shange (about a high school in Oakland.) attached below.
1. For one of the two pieces (you pick which one), discuss how it draws on/ builds on Judith Butler’s concept of performativity, or at least draw some parallels between the author’s approach and Butler’s ideas. Make sure to draw on the audiovisual materials for this question.
2. For the other piece, discuss how it draws on/ builds on one of the other theorists we have covered in this class. Select ONE from the following three possibilities:
Foucault (for example, biopower, power/knowledge, how government operates)
Bourdieu’s ideas (for example, distinction, cultural capital, social capital, economic capital, and symbolic violence)
Structure vs. agency (specify James Scott, Saba Mahmood, or Erazo & Benitez)
